By the Grace of Allah and the wonders of modern technology, you can get a live broadcast of the taraweeh from the Ka’ba in Makkah, anywhere in the world.
While the jamaat of a million Muslims from thousands of places is inspiring to watch, is it ok to join as well? Can we follow the prayer being lead miles and miles away?
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi answers
No matter how beautiful the Taraweeh is from Makkah, unless you're in Makkah and in the Haram, you cannot follow the Imam a thousand miles away.
In fact, even if you're in the city of Makkah but in your house and you're not in the Haram, then you're not allowed to follow somebody who is many, many miles away from you. To be a part of the Jama'ah, you have to be physically connected, even if there are a thousand roads.
So Makkah has, Masha'allah Tabarakallah more than a thousand roads, but they're physically connected. If you are not physically connected, if you're not in the proximity, then I'm afraid that it does not count as a salah. However, feel free to watch the Taraweeh as much as you want and enjoy it as much as you want. You just can't pray behind the television screen.
