For the sake of rulings, Islamic scholars have divided people into those that are living and those who have passed away. If someone is alive you are allowed to do deeds on their behalf if they are not capable of doing it themselves. An easy example would be of someone who isn't able to do Hajj physically.
For someone who has passed away there are a lot of things you can do for their benefit. You can give charity, perform sacrifice/Udhiya, perform Hajj and ask for forgiveness.
